Sharing insights from digital marketing students in Dublin, this series will investigate their motivations and highlights during their study.
Today we spoke to Olivier Lacroix who is currently in the second year of his part-time Master programme in UCD.
1) Olivier, to start tell us in a couple of sentences about what you do?
I am a French guy living in Ireland for over 5 years and currently I am working as part of the EMEA Web Marketing team in Salesforce Dublin. I
am the main point of contact for the Webinar Programme that we are running in
EMEA. A part of my job is to make sure that every stage of the webinar funnel
is optimized and performing well such as the landing page, registrations or the
level of attendance.
2) Why did you decide to do a master in digital marketing?
Originally I come from a technical background in web development but I realised I wanted to learn more about digital marketing strategy. I also realised that I learned a lot about online marketing in my job and while writing my blog which I really enjoyed. However I did not have an official qualification on my CV in this subject which is why I decided to do a course.
3) How did you decide then which course to choose?
Having done a Diploma in Digital Marketing in DBS a couple of years prior to starting the Master programme I knew that I wanted learn about the subject from a strategic point of view. I then got a recommendation for the MSc in Digital Marketing in UCDs Smurfit Business School. After I went to an open night event and spoke to different people from the school I liked what I saw and went for it.
4) What do you like about this course?
In the diploma course in DBS I learned a lot about digital marketing best practice and tools which I had previously used in my job to some extend. This was very beneficial but I wanted to learn more about how to market a product online, how to conduct market research and how all the elements of digital marketing planning and execution would fit together into a bigger picture to bring a company forward.
5) If you could give someone who is considering a digital marketing course 3 tips, what would they be?
First of all you need to be very passionate about digital marketing since these courses take up a lot of your time, in particular if you do are studying part-time and have a full-time job on the side.
It is important not just to go to lectures but to embrace certain topics that you find very interesting and to investigate them in detail on your own study time.
Lastly, think about your objectives when choosing a course. Do you want to learn for yourself, to know what people are talking about when they speak about SEM, CPC etc? Then a diploma is probably enough for your needs. But if you are thinking about a career in the industry and if you want to apply online marketing tactics in your job? Then it is best to go for a certificate or even one of the master programmes.
Thank you to Olivier for sharing his insights with us! If you have any questions for Olivier don't hesitate to comment below.
