5 Questions for a Digital Marketing Student - DCU

Choosing the right qualification is never an easy task, especially when you are considering digital marketing as a subject. The best feedback I heard from students is to connect to someone who has done a course previous to you and ask them all your questions. The blog series '5 Questions for a Digital Marketing Student' is aimed to do just that.

Sharing insights from digital marketing students in Dublin, this series will investigate their motivations and highlights during their study.

Today we spoke to Moritz Wolf who has graduated from the MSc in Management with Digital Marketing in DCU.

1) Moritz, to start tell us in a couple of sentences about what you do?

I am working as a Display Advertising Operations Specialist for Yahoo. My main task is to be the primary contact for multiple clients in order to manage their online display advertising campaign in the Yahoo network.

2) Why did you decide to do a master in digital marketing?

I did my Bachelor degree in media and communication in Germany where I realised that I had a special interest in online media so I knew this is the way to go for me. Also I wanted to study abroad and Dublin was the best choice for me.

3) How did you decide then which course to choose?

Well, I knew I wanted to study digital marketing and I looked at a few courses in London and Dublin. Dublin was the best option for me as it was more affordable and the reputation of the universities and in particular DCU for this particular field was very good. Another option in DCU was their Master in E-commerce but in the end I chose the MSc in Digital Marketing.

4) What do you like about this course?

I really liked about the course in DCU that is had a great balance of practical and theoretical elements. The course was quite challenging which I believe gave me the necessary skills to deal with many common situations in my professional life.

My favourite subject was NGM – next generation management. It consisted of several projects chosen by you where you could apply your skills. The projects I particularly enjoyed was when I spend time with senior citizens teaching computer skills. I also build a marketing plan for an NGO during that time.

I also liked the variety of academic and guest lectures from the industry as well as attending industry events in Google and the likes.

5)  If you could give someone who is considering a digital marketing course 3 tips, what would they be?

1)   Networking: Make sure you network all the time. Try to connect with someone who has done the course before you start, that is easily done on LinkedIn. But throughout your time in college always keep networking because these are the relationships that might connect you to the right job opportunity when you graduate.

2)   Only pick digital marketing if you are interested in the topic on a personal level. Digital Marketing is a fast-evolving subject matter that requires you to put in lots of time beyond your studies to keep up to date with all relevant trends.

3)  Try and do an internship abroad. International experience after/before you do a course sets you apart from the crowd.
